- LANtastic(TM) Network Operating System
-
- To anyone who believes that all big-capability PC networks demand
- big bucks, big hassle and big RAM, we offer the LANtastic PC
- Network.
-
- Only LANtastic gives you a long list of powerful features at a
- price even the smallest installation can afford. So you can afford
- to link as few as two PCs. And grow to 300 PCs. Without sacrificing
- capabilities or speed.
-
- And only LANtastic uses the smallest RAM of any LAN. So you can run
- all your programs on the PCs you already have, without springing
- for the high cost of memory upgrades.
-
- Plus, LANtastic NOS can be run on four different hardware platforms
- - with LANtastic 2Mbps Adapters or Ethernet adapters, as well as in
- a serial/parallel/modem version, or in a version that runs on
- selected third party adapter cards.
-
- No wonder LANtastic has received so much industry recognition:
-
- "Artisoft's LANtastic is our choice once again for its overall
- excellence in speed, features, and innovation. It maintains its low
- price and small RAM requirements in Version 3.0 but offers much
- more."
- -- PC Magazine, May '90
-
- "Our clear choice for favorite low-cost but highly effective LAN is
- LANtastic from Artisoft."
- "The LANtastic system is truly a pleasure to use."
- - PC Magazine, March '89
-
- "...LANtastic's advanced technologic design and performance make it
- a clear winner across almost all performance tests."
- "Installation was fast and easy, and the user interface was clear
- and intuitive."
- - LAN Times, July '90
-
- "LANtastic's low price, painless installation and minimal use of
- RAM hit all the key points, and hit them hard. It's a winning
- package - and a Best Buy."
- - PC World, November '89
-
- Peer-to-peer resource sharing eliminates the expense of a dedicated
- server. Dedicated server networks force you to set aside a single,
- central machine as a dedicated server. It's dedicated exclusively
- to distributing resources and information to requesting work-
- stations.
-
- The LANtastic network, a peer-to-peer network, allows any machine
- to be a server, a workstation or both. Because LANtastic eliminates
- the expense of a dedicated machine, requires less time to set-up,
- and is easier to understand, it has made networking economically
- viable in a much wider range of applications, even in installations
- having as few as two machines.
-
- LANtastic's installation program makes setup a breeze.
- LANtastic NOS comes on one diskette with one manual. And
- LANtastic's installation program automatically installs most of
- your network software, so you can be up and running in minutes.
-
- LANtastic uses less RAM than any other LAN.
- LANtastic NOS runs in the memory your PCs already have, with plenty
- left over for word processors, databases and spreadsheets - no
- extended memory required. That's because LANtastic NOS uses an
- amazingly small amount of a PC's base RAM - less than 40K on a
- server and under 12K on a workstation.
-
- LANtastic is the first with Voice.
- With optional Voice Adapter cards installed, LANtastic permits
- voice communications across the network. Using the telephone-style
- handset provided with the Voice Adapter, you can send a voice
- message to another user. Pop-up notification appears on the
- receiving user's screen, informing him that he has an incoming
- voice message. He can use Voice Chat to carry on a real-time
- conversation. Or the voice message can be saved in a digital format
- for playback later -- in your own voice. Voice makes sending
- messages faster and much more convenient, as well as more
- expressive and personal.
-
- Electronic mail includes pop-up notification and chat feature.
- One easy-to-use menu lets you use LANtastic's Chat feature to send
- text messages back and forth between two computers - just like a
- conversation. Another menu lets you send and save messages for
- reading at a later time. In either case, notification pops-up on
- the receiver's screen to let him know he has an incoming message.
-
-
- No LAN surpasses LANtastic's ability to support CD-ROM drives.
- LANtastic NOS supports CD-ROM drives that use Microsoft CD-ROM
- extensions. The extension software resides on the computer to which
- the CD-ROM drive is attached, not on the remote computer. According
- to PC Magazine, which awarded LANtastic an additional Editors'
- Choice just for its ability to network CD-ROMs: LANtastic
- "...offers the cleanest network integration possible."
- - PC Magazine, February '90
-
- Built-in security protects data.
- Username with Password prevents unauthorized entry into a system.
- Access Control Lists let you give different users different
- privileges. You can limit any user's access to certain hours and
- assign each user all or any combination of the following
- privileges: read, write, modify, create, delete and rename files,
- make, delete and lookup directories, execute programs and change
- file attributes.
-
- Disk caching boosts network speed.
- LANtastic's disk caching lets you process data much faster than
- many other networks. Instead of the disk having to make numerous
- reads and writes, data is temporarily stored in the memory cache
- until it is either written to the disk or flushed. By reducing the
- number of physical accesses to the disk, network speed is greatly
- increased.
-
- Network laptops and modems.
- LANtastic NOS is available in a serial/parallel/modem version,
- called LANtastic Z. You can use LANtastic Z to remotely access a
- network via modem, or to interconnect laptops and desktops.
-
- More open files per server supports larger networks.
- LANtastic supports larger networking applications by allowing you
- to open up to 5100 files per server.
-
- LANtastic despools to multiple printers simultaneously.
- Unlike many other LANs -- which only despool to one printer at a
- time- LANtastic automatically despools to two or more printers
- simultaneously. LANtastic also allows for the creation of printer
- definition files to define draft, letter quality, different fonts,
- banner pages, tab expansion, and other printer options.
-
- Audit trails track network activity.
- LANtastic's audit file capability monitors all access to subdirect-
- ories and printers. This means you can know who used a PC, printer
- or other device, when they used it, and how long they used it. You
- also know if someone tries to enter "locked" directories. Or
- exactly how many characters a printer printed. The name of the user
- and the computer he was using, as well as the time, is logged. This
- gives accurate information for billing and helps in maintaining
- security.
-
- LANtastic supports DOS 3.1 file and record locking.
- LANtastic is compatible with DOS 3.1 and above (3.2 is not
- recommended) and supports DOS 3.1 file and record locking. Since
- almost all common software programs use DOS, the way they operate
- on your computers will not change after you install LANtastic.
-
- Remote booting supports diskless workstations.
- With optional Artisoft ROM chips for Ethernet or LANtastic ROM
- Daughter Boards for 2Mbps installed, LANtastic NOS will enable
- diskless workstations to remotely boot off a network server instead
- of needing a floppy or hard drive.
-
- Run other NetBIOS-compatible applications programs.
- Because LANtastic is NetBIOS-compatible, you can run hundreds of
- other NetBIOS-compatible applications programs on your LANtastic
- network. For example, you could run Artisoft's The Network Eye«.
- With The Network Eye you can remotely control the keyboards and
- view the screens all your network PCs using just a single PC.
