  45. Peer-to-peer resource sharing eliminates the expense of a dedicated
  46. server. Dedicated server networks force you to set aside a single,
  47. central machine as a dedicated server. It's dedicated exclusively
  48. to distributing resources and information to requesting work-
  49. stations.

  51. The LANtastic network, a peer-to-peer network, allows any machine
  52. to be a server, a workstation or both. Because LANtastic eliminates
  53. the expense of a dedicated machine, requires less time to set-up,
  54. and is easier to understand, it has made networking economically
  55. viable in a much wider range of applications, even in installations
  56. having as few as two machines.

  71. With optional Voice Adapter cards installed, LANtastic permits
  72. voice communications across the network. Using the telephone-style
  73. handset provided with the Voice Adapter, you can send a voice
  74. message to another user. Pop-up notification appears on the
  75. receiving user's screen, informing him that he has an incoming
  76. voice message. He can use Voice Chat to carry on a real-time
  77. conversation. Or the voice message can be saved in a digital format
  78. for playback later -- in your own voice. Voice makes sending
  79. messages faster and much more convenient, as well as more
  80. expressive and personal.

  82. Electronic mail includes pop-up notification and chat feature.
  83. One easy-to-use menu lets you use LANtastic's Chat feature to send
  84. text messages back and forth between two computers - just like a
  85. conversation. Another menu lets you send and save messages for
  86. reading at a later time. In either case, notification pops-up on
  87. the receiver's screen to let him know he has an incoming message.

  90. No LAN surpasses LANtastic's ability to support CD-ROM drives.
  91. LANtastic NOS supports CD-ROM drives that use Microsoft CD-ROM
  92. extensions. The extension software resides on the computer to which
  93. the CD-ROM drive is attached, not on the remote computer. According
  94. to PC Magazine, which awarded LANtastic an additional Editors'
  95. Choice just for its ability to network CD-ROMs: LANtastic

  99. Built-in security protects data.
  100. Username with Password prevents unauthorized entry into a system.
  101. Access Control Lists let you give different users different
  102. privileges. You can limit any user's access to certain hours and
  103. assign each user all or any combination of the following
  104. privileges: read, write, modify, create, delete and rename files,
  105. make, delete and lookup directories, execute programs and change
  106. file attributes.

  108. Disk caching boosts network speed.
  109. LANtastic's disk caching lets you process data much faster than
  110. many other networks. Instead of the disk having to make numerous
  111. reads and writes, data is temporarily stored in the memory cache
  112. until it is either written to the disk or flushed. By reducing the
  113. number of physical accesses to the disk, network speed is greatly
  114. increased.

  116. Network laptops and modems.
  117. LANtastic NOS is available in a serial/parallel/modem version,
  118. called LANtastic Z. You can use LANtastic Z to remotely access a
  119. network via modem, or to interconnect laptops and desktops.

  121. More open files per server supports larger networks.
  122. LANtastic supports larger networking applications by allowing you
  123. to open up to 5100 files per server.

  125. LANtastic despools to multiple printers simultaneously.
  126. Unlike many other LANs -- which only despool to one printer at a
  127. time- LANtastic automatically despools to two or more printers
  128. simultaneously. LANtastic also allows for the creation of printer
  129. definition files to define draft, letter quality, different fonts,
  130. banner pages, tab expansion, and other printer options.

  132. Audit trails track network activity.
  133. LANtastic's audit file capability monitors all access to subdirect-
  134. ories and printers. This means you can know who used a PC, printer
  135. or other device, when they used it, and how long they used it. You
  136. also know if someone tries to enter "locked" directories. Or
  137. exactly how many characters a printer printed. The name of the user
  138. and the computer he was using, as well as the time, is logged. This
  139. gives accurate information for billing and helps in maintaining
  140. security.

  142. LANtastic supports DOS 3.1 file and record locking.
  143. LANtastic is compatible with DOS 3.1 and above (3.2 is not
  144. recommended) and supports DOS 3.1 file and record locking. Since
  145. almost all common software programs use DOS, the way they operate
  146. on your computers will not change after you install LANtastic.

  148. Remote booting supports diskless workstations.
  149. With optional Artisoft ROM chips for Ethernet or LANtastic ROM
  150. Daughter Boards for 2Mbps installed, LANtastic NOS will enable
  151. diskless workstations to remotely boot off a network server instead
  152. of needing a floppy or hard drive.

  155. Because LANtastic is NetBIOS-compatible, you can run hundreds of
  156. other NetBIOS-compatible applications programs on your LANtastic
  157. network. For example, you could run Artisoft's The Network Eye«.

  159. view the screens all your network PCs using just a single PC.
